A lot of times I have clients asking me questions such as what I eat during the day, do I exercise all the time, do I drink, hows my social life and so on. I am going to tell you the TRUTH and nothing but the truth about MY day.
I am a BIG believer in practicing what I preach. If you've trained with me then you know that I expect 100% effort. You may not succeed that day, but if you've tried then I am happy. I do the same with myself. I put in 100% every day and do my best to BE my best. Now I am going to be completely honest, it isn't something that comes easy to anyone but if you want something and believe in something then you can create ANYTHING. You wouldn't go to a dentist who had bad teeth would you? So why go to a trainer who doesn't take care of themselves? What I am getting at is I make it a priority to DO what I say.
Now, what does a typical day look like for me? It is not a 9-5pm job, that's for sure. I am up at 4am almost everyday (and I LOVE it). As soon as I wake up I go to the kitchen for my morning "cocktail." My wake up drink is caffeine free but filled will vitamins from cucumbers, spinach, lime and fresh mint. It is amazing by the way so I suggest trying it!
I head out for my first few morning clients and get in my first solid meal around 7am. As most know, I LOVE protein pancakes. Now that I am not training for a show I can add fruit! My pancakes is filled with egg whites, cinnamon, stevia and fresh fruit for topping! I ALWAYS have veggies with EVERY meal so I add a fresh cut up cucumber and a serving of peanut butter for fat. I also make sure I take my daily dose of , vitamins and supplements! Depending on the time of year (cutting or off-season), I will take a multivitamin, kelp, green tea extract, and glutamine.
After my morning clients it is time for ME to get my workout on! Yes, I workout every day during the week. I will lift 4-5 times a week (HEAVY LIFTING) and do HITT sessions post workout 4 times a week. On my off lifting days I am sure to get in a nice long, brisk walk.
Post workout I eat again. Yep, I love eating. After years of dancing and being told NOT to eat, I am so ecstatic to have found a balance of life, food, and happiness. It is amazing that eating the RIGHT things and the right ratios can change your WORLD. If you haven't figured this out yet, let me know and I will help you change your view on food. Anyways, I usually have a protein shake with a half a banana, a big salad and some sort of fat... I am an addict for peanut butter so probably some of that good stuff.
I work from home for the afternoon and typically get in another 3 meals before 5pm. All my meals include a serving of protein and fat. My go to protein right now is either egg whites or protein powder. My taste buds change but as of now this is what I crave! My carb intake is placed in the morning and around post workout meals. However, like I said before, I have veggies at every meal. They are great because they are packed with nutrients and fill you up. Not to mention you can eat a ton of them and they are low in calories.
In the evening I usually take my dog on a walk. Dogs are the best way to stay active without even thinking about it! Sometimes I wish I had my dogs energy! He can go for HOURS and not be tired. I just look at him and I get tired. My last meal for the day, meal 6, is usually my .... you guessed it...... PANCAKE. I like to pour my egg whites into a pie tin, add cinnamon, stevia and some sort of organic extract like maple. I add a dash of baking powder, some coconut flakes and a splash of water. I let this bake in the toaster oven as a I make the other food. Growing up in an Italian household, pasta was my middle name. I didn't know other families didn't eat pasta everyday! As a result, I have fallen in LOVE with spaghetti squash. Spaghetti squash is a healthy lovers alternative to pasta. It is my go to veggie. This veggie is low calorie and again, nutrient packed. 1 cup of this good stuff is about 30 calories while regular pasta is over 200 calories! I make it with tomato sauce and typically eggplant, artichokes and sometimes ground turkey.
Now that is a typical day for me but I am sure you are asking questions like, doesn't she enjoy herself with a cheat or glass of wine? The answer is yes. I do! I am only human. When I am NOT training, I treat myself to 1 cheat MEAL (not a day) and there is almost always a glass of champagne. I am a sucker for sparkling wine and champagne. I find that indulging once a week keeps me sane, keeps my metabolism healthy, and lets me enjoy a social life. If I go out more than once a week, I just make conscious decisions to stay healthy. As many clients know, I always tell the waiter to not put butter or oil on my food. I do this because most restaurants drown the food in fat to make it "taste better." Not only is it more unhealthy but it takes away from the actual flavor of the food. If I am not having a cheat meal, I will order a big salad or veggies with some sort of protein such as chicken or fish.
While we are all human and we all have mistakes, you must learn from your mistakes. I have found a good balance that keeps me healthy, happy, energized, strong, and practicing what I preach. If you commit to a program it will eventually become routine. When you create a routine you will start to see results. If you keep up that routine you will change your lifestyle. Keep going.
