I am sure you have all heard of this saying that seems to be taking over the States, "strong is the new skinny." Thank God! It is about time! My whole life I was told that "being small and skinny" was the "right" way to look. Now given I was a dancer my whole childhood it was a little bit more expected, but was it right? Is that what we want young children and teenagers to learn? No. The whole trend of being unhealthy, eating little to no food, and wearing a double zero because you have no leg muscles is SO 1990. Let's keep it that way.
There seems to be a revolution taking over the US and its women being fed up with the "skinny" look. Now, some ladies are naturally skinny and I do know that it can be very hard for them to put on weight and muscle. However, the majority of Americans do not fall into this body type and most are either have endomorph or mesomorph body types, meaning they can hold onto muscle and/or fat easier. So what have these ladies done to defend their bodies and healthy state of being? They started LIFTING. They started eating cleaner and becoming leaner. They started to PUSH their bodies to their limits and destroy stereotypes.
I'm not a huge crossfit fan and I don't think it is made for everyone (especially if you aren't active!!) BUT these ladies who do it competitively KICK BUTT. Sorry men, I know you don't like when girls can lift more than you but I hate to break it to you, we can. Why is it that women can be equally as strong as men if not stronger? Here is my theory.......men can build muscle mass quicker than women, I'll give you that however, this isn't caveman years and most women and men do about the same amount of exercise now a days and have similar sedentary lifestyles. What does this result in? My theory is that our bodies are evolving and women are catching up to men and can develop muscular strength almost equally as fast as men and we can push our bodies to limits that were never even thought of! These are just my thoughts but let's see what the outcome is in 20 years.
Why is strong so much better than skinny? Not only is it great to be able to lift heavy things, but it is more than just that. Being strong and looking lean doesn't just come from working out, but from eating clean. The great thing about strong girls/guys is that they achieve that look from EATING. Who would have thought? Look awesome by EATING a lot? When I put people on weight loss programs they usually look at me like I am crazy when I tell them how much food I want them to consume. They think I must have made a mistake or maybe I really am crazy. The results? They lose weight. Eating the right foods, macronutrients and timing all plays a role into achieving a rock hard body.
Now you might be thinking that when you change your diet to eating clean and increasing your strength training that you are going to be miserable and tired all the time. False. You will actually find that you have MORE energy. Working out creates an amazing energy (I call it my 2nd cup of coffee) and eating clean detoxes your body and leaves you with endless and contagious amounts energy. I suggest trying it.
So are you ready to join the revolution? Don't waste anymore time saying, "I'll start tomorrow." Life is too short to not make the most of your body!
